Interstate 285, also nicknamed “The Perimeter,” creates a circle around the city of Atlanta and stretches nearly sixty-four miles. It passes through multiple counties, including the densely populated counties of Fulton and Dekalb. It was constructed in the mid-1950's in order to relieve congestion of commuters passing through Atlanta, allowing travelers to bypass the major city and continue on their original interstate of travel such as I-75 or I-85. Any large truck who has a final destination is not Atlanta is required to use I-285 in order to bypass the city, adding to the already congested interstate. Named “America's deadliest interstate” in 2013 in a Vox article, Georgia's I-285 encompasses the metro-Atlanta area and provides drivers access to other various interstates and highways such as I-75, I-85, I-20, and SR 400. According to the Vox article, I-285 earned its title as the deadliest interstate by having the highest number of fatal accidents per mile in 2013. As many local Atlanta natives know, traveling on I-285 at any time of the day could result in a plethora of traffic jams and extended commute times, and since Georgia saw a staggering twenty-three percent increase in traffic fatalities from 2014 to 2015 it is imperative to be an alert driver when using this extremely busy interstate.
In Dekalb County, a crash on I-285 involving three vehicles resulted in one fatality after the driver of one of the vehicles was ejected from his seat. The driver of a Chevrolet Avalanche attempted to speed up and pass another car but instead hit it and lost control of the vehicle, hitting another car and finally coming to a stop in a ditch on the side of the road. Unfortunately, the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, resulting in his ejection from the vehicle and subsequent death. Authorities also believe speed was a factor in the accident. The NHTSA reported that in 2015 twenty-seven percent of traffic fatalities were caused by speeding, and that nearly half of speeding passenger vehicle and motorcycle drivers were unrestrained at the time of the crash. Using a seat-belt and following speed limit signs are two small things you can do that will have a huge impact in the event of an accident, especially when driving through crowded I-285.
