While accidents happen, the consequences of reckless driving are substantial and avoidable. The perpetrator that caused the accident is facing charges of three counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of reckless driving. The friends and families of the victims lost loved ones. Reckless driving is a selfish act that undermines the responsibility given to licensed drivers. If you or someone you know ever finds themselves in a situation in which he or she is unable to drive safely, it is strongly urged to just stay off the roads. There are options to call alternate transportation services or 911. Your life and the lives of others is not worth a temporary state of mind. If you are spot a driver on the road driving recklessly, try to avoid being too close to the vehicle or consider reporting the situation to the authorities.
While no one anticipates being in an accident, it is important to have a plan if an accident is to occur. Having a plan can help mitigate the damage done to others around you and assure that you receive the necessary care as soon as possible.
If you are involved in an accident, the priority should always be safety. Following an accident, move to a safe area if you are able and immediately call 911to let them know the current situation. Once you assure that you and those around you are safe, it’s helpful to try to gather as much information about the accident as possible. Document the scene with photos and videos. Collect the information of others that may have been involved in the accident, including names, license plate numbers, and insurance information. Ask for the name and badge number of any responding police officers. This information will be helpful in order to file an insurance claim or if you later pursue a court case.
Regardless of your intentions, sometimes accidents happen. The most important thing is to do whatever is in your control to stay safe and make smart decisions to protect yourself and other drivers on the road.
