Can I Get a Limited Permit for An Administrative License Suspension for A DUI?

If a person who is administratively suspended has not been convicted of DUI based on an arrest that occurred within five years of the arrest resulting in the suspension (i.e., first DUI in five years), that individual is entitled to a limited permit. This “ALS limited permit” is valid for thirty days, costs $25.00, and entitles the holder of the permit to drive for work-related purposes, to obtain medical care or prescribed drugs, to attend school, or to receive substance abuse treatment.

First Administrative License Suspension for DUI

  • The suspension is for a minimum of 30 days.
  • An administrative license suspension limited driving permit is available.
  • The administrative license suspension limited driving permit costs $25, and it is valid for one year from the date of issuance.
  • The administrative license suspension limited driving permit for an administrative license suspension is available only in person at a DDS location.
  • The administrative license suspension limited driving permit is available to valid GA drivers of any age.
  • The administrative license suspension limited driving permit will transition to be used as the DUI permit if convicted of the underlying DUI prior to the reinstatement of the ALS suspension if age 21 or older at the time of the DUI conviction.
  • If under 21 at the time of the DUI conviction, the ALS limited driving permit will be canceled.
  • Reinstating after the ALS requires: (1) submitting an original certificate of completion of a DDS approved DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program and (2) payment of a $210.00 reinstatement fee (or $200.00 if reinstatement is processed for by mail).

Second Administrative License Suspension (within 5 Years) for DUI

  • The suspension is a minimum of 18 months.
  • No administrative license suspension limited driving permit is available.
  • Reinstatement requires (1) submitting an original certificate of completion of a DDS approved DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program and (2) payment of a $210.00 reinstatement fee (or $200.00 if reinstatement is processed by mail).

Third Suspension/subsequent Suspensions (within 5 Years)

  • The suspension is for 5 years.
  • No administrative license suspension limited driving permit is available.
  • The licensee may apply for a probationary license pursuant to O.C.G.A. §40-5-58 after a minimum suspension period of 2 years after the date of conviction of the underlying DUI.
  • Reinstatement requires (1) submission of an original certificate of completion of a DDS approved DUI Alcohol or Drug Use Risk Reduction Program and (2) payment of a $210.00 reinstatement fee (or $200.00 if reinstatement is processed for by mail).
