Rollover Car Accident Results in Deaths and Serious Injuries

By Ben Sessions on July 8th, 2018 in Car / Auto Accident

Columbus, GA – A recent car accident tragically illustrates the complexities car accidents, civil and criminal law, and the importance of maintaining sufficient uninsured motorist coverage. In Columbus, GA, a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer crashed into a guardrail while traveling on I-85 North. The vehicle rolled over and 2 children in the vehicle were killed.

32-year-old Francisca Taperia-Santiago was driving in her Chevrolet Trailblazer with 10 passengers in a vehicle that was designed to seat only 8 passengers. Imagine that: 10 passengers in a Chevrolet Trailblazer. At approximately 1:30 PM, Taperia-Santiago was headed north on Victory Drive/I-85 in Columbus, Muscogee County, GA, when she suddenly lost control of her vehicle while attempting to veer right. The vehicle swerved passed the outside lane and outside shoulder, hitting a guard rail, and that caused the vehicle to roll over down into a ravine. The vehicle came to a stop on the Victory Drive East ramp. The vehicle came to rest upside down on its roof.

The car accident caused horrific injuries to the victims inside the vehicle. Many were transported to the Midtown Medical Center in order to be treated for their major injuries. Their conditions were in critical condition; however, their current condition is unknown.

Unfortunately, two of the children in the vehicle, 12-year-old Jose Manuel Taperia and the driver’s daughter and 6 year-old Juliana Camaja Taperia, died around 2:15 PM as a result of blunt force trauma.

Police arrested the Franscia Taperia-Santiago on multiple charges, including two counts each of second-degree vehicular homicide and reckless conduct, four counts of unsafe tires, six counts of improper child restraint, one count of failing to maintain lane, and not having a state driver’s license. Ultimately, she will face the possibility more than 30 years in prison as a result of this incident.
