High Speed Police Chase Results in Death in Monroe County, GA

On June 7th, 2018, a high-speed police chase crash in Monroe County resulted in the death of one man, while leaving another man in critical condition.
At approximately 3:19 PM, Monroe county police pulled over a Toyota Camry on I74 north near Mile Marker 192, about 1-mile south of Johnstonville. As the officers approached the vehicle, it was stated that the officers smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. Before the officers could come in contact with the driver, the driver fled the scene, leaving the interstate, heading east on Johnstoneville Road.
Guadalupe A. Garcia was fleeing from deputies with speeds up to 100 mph when he lost control of his Toyota Camry, crashing at GA 42 North at Hickman Road. The vehicle struck several trees as it came to a stop. Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene, while his passenger, Luis A. Perez, was severely hurt. Perez was sent to Navicent Health in order to seek further treatment for his injuries. As of now, the passenger is in critical condition.
The Georgia state patrol were called in to investigate the scene and found cocaine and marijuana inside the vehicle after the crash.
