PUBLIC TRANSIT ACCIDENT: MOTORCYCLIST KILLED FOLLOWING CRASH WITH MARTA BUS
With the I-85 bridge collapse, Atlantans are increasingly places increased reliance upon public transit resources. However, our public transit resources are not prepared to help the numbers of people that are now looking to rely upon them. What we will increasingly see is that the resources of our public transit system are over-extended and accidents will happen within and involving these facilities. Like any driver that is pressured to make it to destinations faster, MARTA bus drivers will face pressure (implied or explicit) to make it to destinations timely. With this pressure, we will see more car and motorcycle accidents involving MARTA bus drivers.
Unfortunately, accidents that result in catastrophic injuries and deaths frequently involve public transit vehicles. Our public transit vehicles are also liable for the injuries they inflict upon those hurt by virtue of the negligence of operators of the vehicles.
On June 2nd, 2016 a 42-year-old motorcyclist struck a MARTA bus and was killed. The incident happened in East Point Georgia.
The MARTA bus was traveling northbound at approximately 5:30 am while the motorcyclist was traveling southbound. The driver did not have any lights on his bus making it more difficult for the MARTA driver to see him.
The motorcycle driver crossed the center lane on Washington Road striking the bus head on. Following the initial impact, the bus driver and passenger Eddie Harris exited the bus and attempted to make contact with the driver.
Unfortunately, the motorcyclist did not respond and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
