Macon sits where I-75 and I-16 meet, with I-475 carrying through traffic around the west side of town. That makes Macon-Bibb County one of the busiest freight crossroads in Georgia, and it means tractor-trailers share the road with local drivers every day on the interstates, Eisenhower Parkway, Gray Highway, Riverside Drive, and the industrial corridors south of downtown. When a fully loaded truck collides with a passenger car, the injuries are often catastrophic.

Truck crash cases are different from ordinary car wrecks. Federal safety rules apply, more than one company may share responsibility, and the most important evidence lives in the truck’s electronic systems and the carrier’s files. Much of it can be lost if no one acts quickly.

Why Truck Accident Cases Are Different

Federal safety rules

Interstate trucking companies and drivers must follow the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Among other things, these rules limit how long a driver may operate (the hours-of-service rules in 49 C.F.R. Part 395, including an 11-hour driving limit and a 14-hour on-duty window for property carriers), set driver qualification and medical standards (Part 391), require inspection and maintenance of trucks and trailers (Part 396), and require drug and alcohol testing (Part 382). A violation of these rules can be strong evidence that a carrier or driver was negligent.

Electronic evidence

Most trucks carry an electronic logging device that records driving time, and many have engine control modules, GPS tracking, forward-facing cameras, and dispatch messaging. That data can show speed, braking, hours driven, and what the driver was doing before the crash. Some of it is overwritten in days or weeks, so a lawyer should send a written demand to preserve it as early as possible.

More than one defendant

Depending on the facts, responsibility may extend beyond the driver to the motor carrier, a broker or shipper, the company that loaded the cargo, or a maintenance contractor. Federal rules generally require interstate carriers of general freight to carry at least $750,000 in liability coverage (49 C.F.R. § 387.9), and many carry more, which can make full compensation possible in cases where a typical driver’s policy would fall far short.

Truck Crashes on I-75, I-16, and I-475

Common causes we see in middle Georgia include driver fatigue on long hauls, following too closely in stop-and-go traffic at the I-75/I-16 interchange, unsafe lane changes and blind-spot collisions, speeding on downgrades, improperly secured or overweight loads, and brake or tire failures from poor maintenance. Read more in why truck accidents on I-75 and I-16 are different.

Courts and Deadlines in Macon-Bibb County

Truck accident lawsuits arising in Macon are generally filed in the State Court or Superior Court of Bibb County, though a case may be filed elsewhere depending on where the defendants reside or do business, and some cases are removed to federal court in Macon.

  • Two years to file most personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits in Georgia (O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33).
  • Six months to give written notice of a claim against Macon-Bibb County when a county vehicle or road is involved. See the Macon-Bibb County claim deadline.
  • Evidence deadlines are often much shorter in practice, because electronic data and video can be overwritten quickly.

Georgia uses modified comparative negligence: your recovery is reduced by your share of fault, and you cannot recover if you are 50% or more at fault (O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33). Since Senate Bill 68 took effect in 2025, juries may also hear evidence about seat belt use in many cases, which makes early investigation of how the crash happened even more important.

What to Do After a Truck Crash in Macon

  1. Get medical care right away, and follow up. Many serious injuries, including brain and spinal injuries, are not obvious at first.
  2. Get the crash report and write down the truck’s company name, USDOT number, and trailer number if you can.
  3. Photograph the vehicles, the scene, and your injuries, and keep the names of witnesses.
  4. Do not give a recorded statement to the trucking company’s insurer. See dealing with the at-fault driver’s insurer.
  5. Talk with a lawyer quickly so a preservation letter can go out before evidence is lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who pays when a tractor-trailer hits my car?

Usually the trucking company’s liability insurer, but the answer depends on who employed the driver, who owned the truck and trailer, and whether anyone else contributed to the crash. Your own uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may also apply.

How long will my truck accident case take?

Cases with serious injuries often take a year or more, because the full extent of the injuries and future medical needs must be understood before the claim can be valued.

What if a loved one was killed?

Georgia allows certain family members to bring a wrongful death claim, and the estate may bring a separate claim for medical and funeral expenses and the person’s pain and suffering. These cases should be investigated immediately.
