Some of What You Need to Know About Houston County, Georgia
Houston County is located in the central portion of Georgia. The county seat is Perry, but the city of Warner Robins is substantially larger in both area and population. There are other smaller cities and municipalities, like Centerville, within Houston County. The county was established on May 15, 1821, as one of five counties in the state. Later, Houston County was reduced in size when Bibb, Crawford, Pike, Macon, and Peach counties were formed, in part, from land that was Houston County. The geographic centre of the county was given the name Wattsville, which was later changed to Perry. It’s not clear why Perry instead of Warner Robins is the county seat.
Houston County is named after Georgia governor John Houstoun, with the spelling being a common 19th-century variation that later evolved to “Houston”. The pronunciation, however, remains to this day “howston.”. Don’t pronounce Houston County, Georgia, like Houston, Texas. If you make the mistake of pronouncing Houston County, Georgia, like Houston, Texas, people are going to know immediately that you aren’t from there and this is still a jurisdiction where it matters.
The counties near to Houston County are Bibb County, Peach County, Twiggs County, Bleckley County, Pulaski County, Dooly County and Macon County.

Car Accidents in Houston County: Roads, Courts, and Deadlines
Many of the crashes we see in and around Houston County happen on I-75, Watson Boulevard, Russell Parkway, GA-96, US-129/GA-247, US-341, and the roads around Robins Air Force Base. Houston County is one of the fastest-growing counties in middle Georgia, and growth has brought heavier traffic on I-75 and the Warner Robins corridors. Cases arising in Houston County are generally filed in the State or Superior Court of Houston County (the Houston Judicial Circuit), which sit in Perry with an annex in Warner Robins.
Deadlines That Matter
- Two years to file most injury lawsuits in Georgia (O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33), and four years for vehicle and property damage.
- Six months to give written ante litem notice of a claim against a city, such as a crash involving a city vehicle or a dangerous city road (O.C.G.A. § 36-33-5).
- Twelve months to give notice of a claim against Houston County (O.C.G.A. § 36-11-1), and generally twelve months for claims involving state roads or state vehicles (O.C.G.A. § 50-21-26).
Crashes Involving Military or Federal Vehicles
If a federal employee driving a government vehicle on duty caused the crash, the claim generally must be presented in writing to the responsible federal agency within two years under the Federal Tort Claims Act before any lawsuit can be filed. These claims have strict form and timing requirements, so talk with a lawyer early.
How Fault and Insurance Work
Georgia is an at-fault state that uses modified comparative negligence: your recovery is reduced by your share of fault, and you cannot recover if you are 50% or more at fault (O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33). Many drivers carry only Georgia’s minimum of $25,000 per person in bodily injury coverage, so your own uninsured motorist coverage can be critical. Before talking to the other driver’s adjuster, read how to handle the at-fault driver’s insurer.
Common Questions
